"How's business?" he asked. "Rotten, never saw the town as dead before," replied the merchant. "Well, if that's the case, I guess I'll wear this suit a little longer until things pick up," replied the customer as he backed into the sunshine. All the Glory A San Francisco paper points to the shipment of a whole train load of washing machines, 41 car loads in all, from an eastern factory center to San Francisco, as an event over which the bay city may well rejoice. It is claimed that the shipment was drawn to San Francisco by the revelation published that 50,722 new single family homes had been erected in the bay region in the last five years. Now that is all very beautiful and very inspiring, from a bay city and bay region point of view.

But in the rejoicing over the enormous character of the shipment of washing machines, and over the marvelous increase of single family homes in the bay region, the error is made that is so often made by San Francisco, of forgetfulness of the part played in the marketing of these machines by the interior valleys--the Sacramento, the San Joaquin, the Santa Clara, the Napa and Sonoma, and even the Moon. There is abundant ground for suspicion that a goodly part of these 41 car loads of washing machines will find homes in the interior, and that San Francisco, while absorbing possibly the greater part, is merely a distributing point for the remainder. San Francisco is prone to serenely claim all the glory, and to forget about the vast and rich region that contributes so mightily to her prestige.
