Record Searchlight Wednesday November 29 1971 NAL basketball to be a 3-way battle Pm a Brown inherits the champions summarizes Brown could hamper us few a time Eric has a bad knee Johnson a sprained ankle but they should work themselves out It will be tough on the footballers with a new coach and some changes in the offense But the NAL start until Jan You get the idea the Cubs will be ready for that start Brown figures that Enterprise with Fink (the league's most valuable player) and three other starters back and a championship jayvee team feeding the Hornets (the JV was 226 and 166 last season) will be the team to beat in the NAL Of course he adds Red Bluff has its starters back and will be strong The Cubs record under Bononi while Brown was an assistant was 90-40 Before that Brown coached the freshman team and it was 63-11 with three NAL titles a pretty fair set of credentials THE SCHEDULE lit the Nevada Union tournament Gm Valley (junior vanity at Chico tonmnmant) Dae at IMOro player this year He attended a Rick Barry camp and was named most valuable player there He is said to be the best one-on-one player on the team Johnson is a surprise and a newcomer a transfer from Los Lomas High in Walnut Creek is aggressive and physical" Brown says when he gets used to the Anderson system going to be an asset" Somebody to give Bryan Fink of Enterprise trouble is the hint you get Brown hopes sophomore Eric Parent (Mark's little brother at 6-5) can do the reserve job for the big men and Marty Verdugo at 5-11 sub for the little men One of Brown's troubles early in the season is that three of the top six are footballers who went to the Section finals and have only been out a week They are Goddard Verdugo and Burnham "It takes a while to get the idea of hitting out of your system regardless of who you says Brown for a couple of weeks they are just going to be football players No doubt about But he figures they'll be just fine by the time the NAL rolls around and he figures that the Cubs aren't going to slack off one bit from the pace established by Bononi (15361 in 10 years) One plus that Brown has Is Newman As a JV coach he won almost every year like three of the last six NAL titles 135-31 in eight years a 42-game winning streak etc etc In other words he has put the varsity players through the mill will be a senior-oriented By ART GAITS ANDERSON The Anderson High Cubs wont exactly have a new look this basketball season with six letter-men returning from the Northern Athletic League championship team but there has been a change in the coaching staff Ron Brown 35 has taken over the varsity job from Chuck Bononi after five years as an apprentice tarry Newman has moved up from the junior-varsity position to assistant to Brown Paul Jones most recently of Montgomery High in Santa Rosa is the JV coach Mark Williams a student assistant is the freshman coach Brown has two starters back from a team that was 21-5 but lost the North Section title to Enterprise High in the last game of the season That starter could be the best bas-ketballer to come out of Anderson High and the Cubs have had many good ones He is Mark Parent 66 190 a three-year varsity performer who has led the team in scoring his past two seasons and led the NAL as a junior with a 20-point average just an exceptional talented young says Brown He was allleague last season Of course he might not have as much help this year Three starters are gone Jeff Hollifield Todd Smith and Kelly Standon Hollifield averaged 11 points a game Smith (also all-NAL) 15 The other starter returning is speedster Jerry Goddard 5-10 guard With him and Parent when the Cubs open at the Nevada Union tournament Thursday will be Ron Holt at 6-3 Paul Johnson at 6-9 and Tom Burnham at 6-3 Red Bluff returning 5 starters RED BLUFF With all five starters back coach Phil Trujillo knows his Red Bluff Spartan basketball team is on the hot seat for the coming Northern Athletic League race But he isn't squirming a bit He says "We'll accept the challenge and expect to be better than last year" Of course he adds that and Anderson should be better too" That's his nutshell capsule of the 1078-79 season a three-team race that's "tougher than the He admits that things look pretty good for his Spartans in his second year at the helm Red Bluff was 14-6 and 5-5 last year with a sophomore and four juniors starting One of the juniors was a returning all-NAL player He made it again which means Tobi Wilson at 6-foot-3 has a chance to be a three-time all-leaguer a rarity indeed The other juniors who are now seniors are Laird Oelrichs Gordon Blackwood and Randy Rick The junior this year is Gale Gilbert Those starters are just 6-4 6-3 6-2 6-3 6-3 No team in the league can match that size Trujillo also says that he has three up from Ted Morgan's junior-varsity squad that can help Mark Gunsauls Darren Gleason and Donnie Button Gleason is the son of the coach at Red Bluff High for years Bemie Gleason Gilbert an all-NAL honorable mention selection led the team in scoring with 12 points a game Wilson hit 10 Blackwood almost that figure One other player expected to help and possibly move into a starting spot was Kevin lesser (another of those 6-3 Spartans) But an auto accident will prevent his playing this year He might not be missed SCL basketball tabs Fall River's Booth as MVP McARTHUR Fall River High sophomore Tina Booth has been named the most valuable player in the Shasta -Cascade League basketball conference Teammates Carrie Hawkins and Kareen Gibson also made the team Fall River finished the season unbeaten with a 12-0 record Tina Sims and Michelle Anunson of Burney twin sisters Eilcena and Elaina Fisher of Big Valley Surprise Valley's Melinda Taylor Trinity's Meloney Wellock Hayfork's Joni Jungwurth and Toni McClellan were the other selections Burney finished with a 9-3 record Modoc was 5-7 and Hayfork was 4-8 Fink leads Hornets Enterprise title By TIM ROBB Enterprise High opened the 1977-78 basketball campaign with only one returning starter and went on to the Northern Athletic League co-championship and the North Section crown Thursday night the Hornets open the 1978-79 season with six senior lettermen including four returning starters and six juniors who are coming off of a 22-2 Junior-varsity squad The Hornet cagers know what win- ning is all about having claimed' three consecutive North Section titles under coach Monte Fitchett and with the return of 06 center Bryan Fink should do their share of winning again this season Fink the NAL most valuable player last year and a two-time allleague honoree is the headliner in the Hornet attack Fink averaged 19 points a game against the league last year and at 220 pounds has the strength to make his presence known underneath the basket he gets the ball inside so tough to said Fitchett plays the game hard and works at it He doesn't let up at The returning regulars joining Fink will be quarterbacking guard Cliff West and forwards Eric Sluis and Dan Whisenhunt Whisenhunt Moot-4 waa an all-NAL honorable mention honoree as a junior Juniors Corey Shamburg Scott Hagan and senior Mique Fudge are BOB EATON New CV coach Falcons faced with a By GREGTROTT CENTRAL VALLEY At one time or another in a coach's career he or she will be faced with a year that is often termed "rebuilding" Most coaches cringe when this word is used but for new Central Valley Falcon coach Bob Eaton that is what he calls the upcoming basketball season in the Northern Athletic League for the Falcons Last year the Falcons were 46 in league and 10-11 overall under coach Bob Johnson Their 4-6 mark waa good for a fourth-place finish but Johnson left Central Valley to take over as varsity coach for Shuts High and when he left so did all five Fal con starters To name a couple 6-4 Jim Coope-rider and 6-5 Eric Johanneaaen graduated as did the other three Johannessen was all-league and Cooperider was honorable mention but what Eaton will desperately miss is the height he needs against the rest of the NAL just too said Eaton referring that he has only one starter over 6-2 Dave Alvord a 6-4 junior center The Falcons also lack in experience with 66 Curtis Rowe the sixth man on squad last year the only man with much game experience In order to be successful Eaton believes his Falcons will have to the ball moving and use control Jhe Falcons will also have to rely heavily on a defense that will have to be tenacious to go anywhere in the NAL have to hustle on defense" said Eaton honestly where the game lies We've got to put a lot of pressure on Besides Rowe and Alvord Eaton will be counting heavily on two seniors guard Clay DeMercurio and forward Mark McIntosh both back from last year's squad The other starter will be 6-2 junior Jed Draper who waa sidelined most of his sophomore year with a broken ankle Helping the starting five will be a sophomore who Eaton has made a varsity player Randy Simmons 5-10 will help in the backcourt and Eaton calls him a possible star in the future for the Falcons as' he is the pure Eaton who coached the Falcon junior-varsity squad for five years admits the outlook for the upcoming year will not be one of the beat for the Falcons but of his team he says (the team) have heart and hustle I don't think they'll ever quit is the strongest I've seen the NAL in BROWN New Cub mentor Yrekafaced with long year ahead YREKA much size and not much is the way coach George Marlatt summarizes his 1978-79 Yrcka High School basketball team There are two tall players on the roster Jeff Evans at 66 and Jamie Hittson at 6-4 but Evans is a Junior with only junior-varsity experience and Hittson was a spot player for the Miners last year As for experience names like Chris Bayuk Steve Pratt Don Shepherd Don Nosier are gone They started most games as Yreka had an 613 record (16 in the Northern Athletic League) for Marlatt's inaugural In addition to Hittson lettermen back this time are Rob Creager Jim Marlatt (the coach's son) Dave Wilson and Jim Brooks The JVs advance from a 76 5-5 team Vem Smith is again the sophomore team's coach do have some good speed and some big factor since limits what you can but explained the team should be all right the individual players realize tie limitations and into their Fitchett who is beginning his eighth season as head Hornet mentor and is just four wins away from his 100th victory said the NAL is toughest been since been think Anderson and Enterprise are the two best but Red Bluff and Shasta are not far he said are too (Harper)" Johnson said just needs a little experience He already has good quickness and is a hard worker and will probably be my print guard next He lories for the Moot6 Gordon to develop into a good shooter and tar Tracy to make a worthwhile contribution This will be Johnson's seventh year in the NAL after spending the previous six at CV and he feels that the league will be really tough this year think that the league has better balance from top to bottom than it has in all the time that I've been Johnson stated chances of any team breezing through league with a 9-1 or 106 record are slim and an 06 mark could very well produce a share of the league He tabbed Enterprise Anderson and Red Bluff as the obvious favorites also saying that he feels that every coach in the NAL will probably feel that way Johnson is being assisted this year by Charlie Kennedy who played his college ball at Westmont a private school near UCLA He is doing student teaching at Shasta this year Former Chico State star Andy Hed-man is running the junior varsity having just returned from Australia where he played in a pro hoop league Shasta will see its first action in the Harlan Carter tournament at Shasta High this weekend all contending for the other guard position while Moot-5 Bob Johnson is expected to see considerable action at forward Jorgen Capener also 6-foot-6 will spell Fink at center in a reverse role John Coffey who lettered after seeing some varsity action at the end of the 1977-78 season Greg Moss and Matt Severtson round out the team that Fitchett describes as deepest I've ever had here in terms of individual players one through 12 we play our particular type of game slow down the offense and work the ball inside then be tough to Fitchett admitted But he was just as quick to point out that the Hornets afford to get into any footraces basic weakness is that we are not very he said a team like ours where you have team speed you have to have that intensity to make up for it If not intense going to get Fitchett said he thinks the constant need for intensity will help retard the chances of complacency setting in think that some teams that win as juniors kind of go through the motions as seniors but in the situation we're in where everyone wants to beat us we're forced to maintain that intensity" Fitchett said he think other teams will be able to just defend against Fink and expect to beat the Hornets are going to try and stop good outside shot but expects him to be aggressive and hit the boards that way Doing most of the rebounding will be two centers Moot6 senior Mike Franklin and Moot-5 junior Bill Bellamy Franklin played sparingly for last team but according to Johnson had worked hard all year and was ready to play when practice rolled around Bellamy was a standout on last year's junior varsity squad and grew more over the summer in addition to filling out are going to cause a lot of problems to people on the Johnson said to our attitude that will be one of our strong Johnson tabbed Randy Wilburn as hia sixth man and hopes to integrate a two-guard offense by the time league rolls around That offense would give Wilburn more1 playing time Doug VanEyck and Allen Perry will come off the bench to spell Bellamy and Franklin VanEyck is also Moot6 and while Perry is three inches shorter Johnson added that he is a very physical player in addition to being an excellent jumper Senior Kurt Bonnette will see some action at forward and has been a pleasant surprise to Johnson The three juniors that round out the squad are guards Tommy Harper and Dean Gordon and forward Doug Tracy Wolves upset minded Basketball season is here and it has arrived with a bang There are six tournaments and 14 season-opening games scheduled over the next three days recorded 285 salmon and 17 steelhead Tuesday By DOUG BUNNELL Two years ago Shasta High won three basketball games Lest year it won eight games If Shasta holds true to form it will win 13 this year But first-year coach Bob Johnson formerly of Central Valley is more concerned with his Wolves role in the Northern Athletic League than he is in total victories (Shasta) going to cause a lot of problems in Johnson said take us a little longer because I'm a first-year coach and have to get to know the kids but we're gearing for league We feel we'll have a say in the outcome of the Johnson will be relying on a starting lineup of four seniors and one junior and has a total of eight seniors on hia 12-man roster players are really hungry especially the seniors who have been in the program for the past few years and are really showing a willingness to play Johnson said Running double-post offense will be senior point guard Rich Braun is a smart Johnson said give us good leadership in addition to a strong outside The forward or wing spots will be held down by a pair of Moot-3 seniors Harold Anderson and Greg Fain Fain is the only returning player who had a lot of playing time last year
