FACTORY How Ice is Nature Succumbs to Man's Master Mind How in natures laboratory ice is made is well understood by those who have lived in the East and felt the rigors of real winter with the thermometer hovering about zero for months and often going much below But "man moves in mysterious ways his wonders to perform" and just how he can freeze Mocks of Artie climate while those engaged in the process are sweltering and perspiring in an atmosphere that registers 100 in the shade is a poser Yc were invited by Mr Nicholas of the new ice factory to inspect the plant just erected at the corner of Yuba and Oregon streets and knowing that a description and explanation of the modus operand! would interest our many readers we gladly responded The plant was put in by the Cyclops Iron Works of San Francisco and the machinery is all of the Ltest pattern and improvements The Cyclops Iron Woiks have plants in operation at Yreka Stockton Woodland and other parts of the Slate all giving satisfaction and supplying patrons with a high grade of ice as pure as can be made from water that has gone through the process of condensation and thorough filtering they are at present engaged in putting in a twenty-five ton plant for Miller ft Lux The machinery proper is used simply to keep alive the chemical action which is the potent agent in the artificial formation of ice Ammonial gases are kept in circulation through a lahyrinthian maze of pipes and coils by a powerful pump and the result cold twenty-five degrees below the freezing point in the brine tank where cans with a capacity each of about 108 pounds are deposited full of water distilled and filtered to destroy all germs and remove all impurities these are frozen solid in about 24 hours People need not fear that the chemical agencies will effect manufactured ice ai the water from which it is made is thrice isolated from ammonial gases First the pipes through which the gas passes has been tested with a pressure of 312 Ilia while the working pressure in the brine tanks is not over 30 lbs This high test was made in order to avoid the possibility of leaks not because it might come in contact with the ice but because the brine woukl have to lie removed from the tanks in making repairs and this would mean considerable expense that could he avoided by exercising care in the start The test was made with air and soapy water was applied to the piper when the minutest aperature would immediately form huge bubbles During the application of the severe tests a cap was forced from the end of a pipe with a loud report that shook the building and before the pump could be slopped liie escaping air literally blew a hole an inch deep into the redwood plank of which the tank is made Of course this was done under a test pressure of ten times the power that will be used when in actual operation but shows the power of the pump in use Not only are the gases kept from the water by pipea that can stand the pressure alluded to but the water is further isolated by heavy galvanized cans These are placed in the brine and stand erect between rows of pipes where the ammonia is kept in circulation and when the water in them is frozen they are taken out and the ice is deposited in a room that lias a storage capacity of 30 tons The tank contains over 500 ft of pipe in tiers several hundred feet more are used in making the circuit and the ammonia from the supply tank in the tower is volatilized and forced by the pump through the 500 feet of pipe in the brine tank up into the tower here condensed by a cold spray of water it finds its way back into the supply tank in a liquid form and is taken up and forced over the circuit again and again There is absolutely no Iks after once in operation and the cost of running the pump and the labor in handling the ice represents the cost of manu-acture Jack Frost will have to get up early in the morning to beat this record of economy The water that is used comes from the boiler in the form of steam does its duty in operating the engine then by means of the exhaust it is taken to the tower and goes through the process of condensation and reboiling This process is interesting and ingenious The first task assigned to the exhausted steam is to reboil the water aflerthe first condensation This is done by leading the steam into a drum shaped boiler with two compartments the inner compartment receiving the condensed water and the steam passes through the outer compartment into a tier of pipe where by means of a cold water spray it is in turn condensed only to be reboiled in the vessel it had just escaped from in the form of steam From this inner compartment the water flows through a second tier of pipe and is again condensed thereafter it is forced through a charcoal filter the filter contains 28 cubic feet of charcoal and the water comes from it as pure as crystal it then flows into the receiving tank where it is cooled almost to the freezing point and from here it is taken at will to fill the cans in which it is frozen for the market The final process of cooling after boiling reboiling and filtering has the effect of stUI further cleansing the water and it is ready for the consumer in the purest possible state The method of manufacture is simply motion circulation and there is no possibility of the two potent elements coming in contact to the injury of either The gases are hermetically sealed the water is frozen in cans that will keep out all impurities The product is just as good as natural ice frozen in a filtered lake front which all the germs of disease have been removed and by actual test it has been shown that artificial ice lasts longer than the natural product When Redding makes what Redding consumes then will Redding be prosperous It has lieen said that we do not show the ropcr spirit to become an important center of distribution and commerce That we have refused to patronize several local institution not because their competitors made better matches or better brooms or what not or made them cheaper but because of careless indifference If a community that has the natural advantages which we possess cannot alter this Silurian spirit it is high time we received an infusion of new blood with a better grace than some of us have heretofore displayed Welcome every new industry every enterprising individual support every home manufacturing establishment in preference to imported product and then we will have more lalior employing instu-tions The new plant has a drawing capacity of 3000 pounds daily besides this all kinds of sodas and temperance drinks will he bottled The firm has a five year lease on the Bailey mineral springs near Castella and the natural mineral water will he bottled and placed on the market Six men will he employed in the start The tank is at present charged and from now on Redding can show to the world her appreciation of enterprise Bedding ofllct GaaanJ dtwy opa
