listed as business agent of the union and who signed the complaint for the arrest of Ruby Pearl Burgett for putting sugar in the gas tank of car is' the financial secretary of the union Established March 12 1852 Published every Thursday by Redding Record Inc at 1205 Placer Street Redding California in the Shasta-Cascade Wonderland Entered as second class matter at the postoffice at Redding California under an act of congress Subscription rate payable in advance $250 Per Year Hoover Kefauver and Redding When Edgar Hoover director of the FBI testified before the Kefauver committee the other day ho gave the committee and American citizens everywhere including Redding some good advice and something to think about: who engage in widespread vice activities and rackets could not long survive without their ally the political renegade No community in the land is contaminated by rackets and corruption without the assistance of local interests which hold law enforcement in restraint Law enforcement officers are the representatives They are persons with unlimited power they must obey those -whom they hold office Regardless of their' honesty however they are frequently powerless Only aroused and enlightened citizens can take the cuffs off their wrists and place them where they belong upon the racketeers criminals and corrupt A community have to put up with crime or corruption Hoover said and the solution of that problem is simple there alliances between the beneficiaries of crime and officialdom? If there are a few aroused citizens can accomplish more than the enactment of new legislation because the underworld cannot stand exposure One vigorous crusading newspaper which does not pull its punches can do more to build up a will to enforce existing laws than the enactment of new laws which shift responsibility from local authorities and provide an alibi for their Shasta county has kept reasonably free from the gambling racket at least partly because slot machines are easy to detect and the gambling men know the Record-Searchlight regards slot machines as news not quite so easy to prove the existence of houses of prostitution sometimes you have to wait until they have established a as the law puts it As of this moment has it that there are three such houses in Redding and the is strong enough to allow law enforcement officers to close them if they want to We always admire the other fellow more after we have tried to do his Grundy County Mo Gazette No TV Problem Yet Parents at least and perhaps the rest of us can take some comfort from the announcement that there any prospect of television in Redding and vicinity for at least the next five years During that time perhaps TV programming will come jof age and learn more about how to live with this fascinating new medium of communication A visit to southern California where five to seven channels are available and where TV antennas sprout from thousands of homes and even trailers demonstrated how much television has affected the lives of those who have it available Children are crazy about it and most of them are undiscriminating They watch the commercials almost as avidly as they watch Hopalong Cassidy If permitted to spend a good many hours a day watching the screen In some places TV has interfered with school work and with normal sleep etc Conscientious parents find they have to police the TV watching Some of them use it as an element of discipline you mow the lawn this afternoon you watch television etc Not everyone has a set so some distinction in being one of the owners Sometimes said people who afford a set or want one put up a TV antenna anyway so that it will look like keeping up with the Joneses If you have one fun at first to invite people in to see it But then there comes the problem of people who invite themselves This too is a special problem with youngsters All the kids in the neighborhood will gravitate to the home with television and they want to go home to dinner One housewife has solved the kids-and-TV problem by announcing that if the porch light is on a sign invited to come in and watch If out then they to come You pay attention to a TV show and carry on much conversation Most families figured out yet what to do about that Friends will come in for the evening spend several hours and then leave without saying more than a dozen words TV programs range from utter garbage to some really marvelous performances There are too many westerns and too many old dated grade movies Wrestling for some reason has caught public fancy TV coverage of football and baseball games is so good that many ardent sports fans would rather watch a game over TV than see the game in the stadium or ball park This creates financial problems for the sponsors of athletics who are experimenting with various possible colutions including a three-day delay in televising Old-fashioned vaudeville is staging a comeback on television and TV has its pitchmen the same smooth talkers who sell vegetable shredders magic ink removers etc at county fairs Most of the commercials are too long and too insistent When TV grows up audiences stand for the abuse they take now' some wonderful whimsy such as for a puppet show which includes Uncle Captain Cecil the Seasick Seaserpent and Dishonest John who is referred to affectionately as The biggest recent TV hit was the coverage of the Kefauver crime investigation hearings It brought home to millions of Americans the crummy tieup between crimeand government in many communities and created a demand for a cleanup Right now because you have TV you have to grapple with the problems it brings But just the same when TV is available here want a set the Matter 9 the matter with us here in Shasta county? We have failed rather miserably to meet our responsibilities toward charities youth organizations and civic and patriotic duties We raised a little over half of the budget for the Community Chest The Red Cross -drive has been in progress almost a month and raised only $2500 of a $9000 quota This despite the fact that the Red Cross is mostly doing essential war work including blood collection and a variety of services for fighting men and their families Are we tired? we care? Or what is the matter? time we shook off our lethargy Gets School Funds The sum of $69434 has been allocated to the Weaverville elementary school district by the state allocation board The funds will be used for the construction of a new classroom one multi-purpose room a kindergarten and a kitchen and cafeteria at the Weaverville elementary school Loses Wallet Earl Houck Project City reported to city police that he lost a red alligator leather wallet containing about $15 and personal papers some place in Redding Saving Toward a Civic Auditorium The city of Redding is getting about $20000 from the sale of the property where the old dog pound stood This seems to be an opportunity to start a fund toward the civic auditorium which Redding needs so badly like to see that $20000 set aside specifically for the auditorium fund so that it would grow each year For the kind of auditorium Redding needs $20000 would be just a starter The total cost might be a half million dollars Obviously we have the money for one even if defense regulations bar construction of such things But the day will arrive when it will be OK to build and we ought to be getting ready Bond issues add interest expense to the cost of construction so the more money we accumulate in advance the more save when the time comes to build Why a civic auditorium? One big reason is conventions Redding is a natural for conventions: convenient location major attractions such as Shasta dam and lake Lassen Volcanic national park Trinity Alps etc and suitable hotel and motel accommodations During 1950 Redding was host to a number of conventions including the Moose midwinter conference and the annual conference of the California division International Association for Identification The Redding chamber of commerce which helped secure the conventions and helped make them successes estimates that the people who came here for conventions spent $100000 here This year already had the California Young Farmers and the Sierra-Cascade logging conference Ambassadors and the Rotary district conferences are due in April Our facilities just adequate to do a smooth job writh the larger conferences some big ones we handle at all A well-designed civic auditorium would have room for a large business session and a number of small rooms for committee meetings It also should have a banquet room in which 500 or more persons could be served at once Such a building would have constant use between conventions as a place for club and youth meetings concerts dances banquets etc It will take time to plan one properly It will take time to raise the money start now Underprivileged One-Fourth accurate dial service has now been extended to 75 of every 100 Bell So says an information pamphlet issued by the Bell telephone system in observance of the 75th anniversary of the telephone which carried its first complete sentence on March 10 1876 Redding unhappily is in the underprivileged 25 per cent which does not yet have fast accurate dial service Larger cities have it Smaller towns have it But we.
