Texas oil fields are absorbing the attention of this section of country but when one compares notes upon the California and Texas markets there seems to be without question a large margin in favor of the Golden state The oi territory of California which runs like a mineral zone from southeast to northwest has been demonstrated to cover an area of 42000 square miles So far as I am aware the east and the middle weBt are not very thoroughly posted on the new industry of the Golden state In California coa costs from $8 to $14 per ton It is im ported from the state of Washington British Columbia and is also brought In ballast from Australia Tbe die covery of oil from Kern county north ward within the past eighteen mouths has made millionaires bytheBcore and has Increased the fortunes of the this year surprise the world There are two smelters in operation one by the Mountain Copper company an English corporation the other by Captain De Lamar and a third is in process of construction by a Boston syndicate Notwithstanding the great resources of Shasta county in the mineral Held of gold and copper Mr Laug says that the discovery of oil which is of a high grade character and far different from that found in the central and southern counties Inasmuch as it brings a value of from $12 to $14 a barrel will far supercede even the great output of gold aud copper and that the news which will come from Bhasta county on the production of oil will startle tbe world T1BBITTS APPOINTED Is Field Deputy In State Mining Bureau Tibbittx the mining man received a letter from State Mineralogist at Kennet The directors of the company at Boston are divided upon the matter some of them urging Ken net as tbe natural site while others contend that it should be built upon the 800-acre tract which the company owns at the mouth of Motion creek a half mile below Copley The two possible sites are about equidistant from tho Shasta King King Copper and other mines of the company and the ronte from the mines to neither site offers special advantage over the other It is understood that those most intimately associated with the selection of the site strongly favor that at Ken-uet Here there is sufficient ore available to meet all demands Should the announcement that Kennet has been selected soon be made little Bur-prise and much gratification will be felt A prominent mine of the vicinity which is again being worked is the Mammoth A force of seven men is at work under Fred King and it Is reported that the force will be increased to twenty men The further exploration of this mine ft is 8pecUl Correspondence FbbsPbess DeLamar June For the past week the smelter has been the center of all Interest in the town Everybody has been up to see its men women and children Every stranger who comes to town at once gravitates to the institution Everybody who 1b capablelof judging such things says that it is the best smelter the most conveniently arranged they have seen There is no hot-cake pulling -no pot-pulling no sacking of matte as at Keswick The converter turns out bullion not matte It is said to be 98 or 99 per cent copper to say nothing of gold and silver The bullion is in the shape of rectangular blocks about two feet square and three inches thick Each block weighs about 840 pounds and several tons of them have already been produced The converter floor and yard are now crowded with them A road has been graded so that teams can drive up to the converter flow and load the bullion Shipments will doubtless commence soon Tbe boarding house at the mine closed June 1st All the miners-will consequently have to board down town This will help out the numerous boarding houses and hotels 'Apparently however they needed no more custom for they were all full to overflowing Frequently lodgers have to be turned away for the lack of accommodations If you come to DeLamar you need not worry about getting plenty to eat but you had better first look out for a place to sleep The miners have been given a raise in wages They are now to receive $275 per day instead of $250 and muckers are to get $250 instead of $225 There seems to be no trouble about miners getting work Fred
