life was probably saved yesterday by his shoes He was employed on one of the new McDougalls In attempting to put a belt on a pulley a set screw caught in his clothing and he was whirled arouud and Feet Beneath the Surface The people of the vicinity of Elmore are wondering eagerly if oil exists beneath the surface of their holdings in tbe canon An oil excitement was started there several days ago by the declaration of a patriarch from Yolo county who based his statement on the actions of his divining rod Philemon Beck of Knights Landing is a substantial German -American citizen who having placed himself beyond the reach of want devotee his time to the study of kindly provisions for mankind- The divining rod has been his especial study From the antics of a supple branch from a tree held
