Sewer to Be Run In Tunnel From Center Street Out Yuba to Alley Between Market and Jenny Creek Road to Bo Improved Fire Alarm System Is Accepted A tunnel large enough for work men to go through la to at once be cut beneath thfe surface of Yuba street for a distance of four hundred feet This tunnel will be necessary In the laying of a new and larger sewer from the manhole at the alley on Yuba street between Market and California Street to connect with the sewer that extends south on Center street Three six Inch lateral sewer pipes enter the manhole at the alley near the Free Press' office and the outlet for all of the sewage running from these pipes is an eight Inch pipe extending to Center street That la not large enough and a twelve-inch pipe Is required At the meeting of the City Trustees Monday night the City Engineer and Superintendent of Sewers were ordered' to proceed and lay the new sewer The matter of giving out the work by contract came up but the Trustees concluded that their past experience with contract work was enough to convince them that more satisfactory results could be obtained by having the work done by day's work especially when the city has able officials to see that the work la properly pep formed There will be four 'hundred feet of new twelve-inch pipe to lay and to place It without disturbing the muchly traveled thoroughfare it will be necessary to tunnel A deep shaft will be sunk at the manhole near the Free Presaofflce and about two other shafts sunk at Intervals along the street at an iverage depth of eighteen feet a tunnel four by five feet will be cut to Connect with the sewer at Center street The pipe for this work is already on hand and paid for and the work of laying it will cost about $1500 The work will be' commenced at once the tools and other working apparatus having been gotten ready Tuesday Another piece of work that will be decided Improvement was ordered Monday night It was the thorough graveling of that part of the Jenny Creek he Shasta road lying within the city limits Street Superintendent Stabler waa ordered to get sufficient men and teams and proceed with the work The Gamewell Are alarm system ust Installed waa formally accepted by the Board Monday night and a letter of acceptance will be forwarded to the company that put in the system 0 Wheeler electrician for the Northern California Power Company inspected and tested the system for the Board He reported that the work of- Installation was first-class that the system la excellent and that all of the work haa been done in such a way that It should give no trouble Regarding the alarm box on the telephone pole at No 2 fire house over which there has been some trouble the telephone company complaining that It la dangerous Mr Wheeler said he saw no reason why It should be removed He said that the box and an Iron pipe on that pole was not dangerous as it was a cable pole and the pipe on It cuts no figure The box will not be removed and assuming a more satisfactory shape The present Board of City Trustees la- endeavoring to conduct the municipality In an economical manner consistent with the proper keeping up of the streets and the 1000 feet of new lire hose were again laid over When the hose was purchased waa agreed that the city would have four months in which to pay the bill The four months will not be up until December The Man Juat Released From Jail Aftar Serving Thirty Dayo for Vagrancy Gate Into Trouble and Reclcto an Officer Ryan a well known character along upper California street who waa Juat released from the
