MISCELLANEOUS HeIp Wanted GRAND FOR TWO WEEKS ONLY Benii Saturday Morning Jib 21 li1 Toller succeeds in killing the Populist party he will have accomplished some good by bolting the St Louis convention No doubt there are many silver Republicans in this city and county who feel sore over the financial platform adopted by the Republican party at St Louis They had hoped that the party would declare in favor of silver These Republicans seem to be satisfied with McKinley but do not like the platform on which he was nominated The Republicans of California are in a peculiar position They believe in protection they believe in McKinley have faith in his personal honesty and integrity They do not feel any confidence in the Democratic party or its professions and look upon Populists and their queer and impractical ideas with disfavor The Free Press expects these Republicans to act conscientiously and vote for the man for president in whom they have the most confidence the candidate whom they believe will do the I best that lie can for the good of the people and who will not block congressional legislation even should congress pass measures not altogether in accord with the Republican platform McKinley was known to be favorable to the enlarged use of silver He was nominated because he was and is the special apostle of protection which after all is the overshadowing issue The Free Press SATURDAY JUNE 27 1896 i Ir the Democrats nominate a free ail ver man at Chicago which they are almost certain to do the Popuiiat party will not carry a single state The strength of the Populist party lies in their attitude on silver Remove this prop by nominating a silver Democrat and tho entire Populist fabric falls to pieces The Democratic party has one advantage which they haw always maintained and which seejns impossible to taka from them no matter how tool-ish they act and that is an almost solid South They go into' each presidential campaign with a certain number of Democratic electoral votes assured Herein lies their strength After all is said the fact remains that Cleveland still represents a large element in his party especially the Eastern states hence when he denounces the free coinage of silver at a ratio of 16 to 1 he voices many Eastern Democrats and we believe we can safely predict that while the gold element in the next Democratic National convention will not predominate it will be much stronger than the silver men may wish and strong enough to make the election of a silver Democrat impossible When Cleveland sounded his note of warning he knew what he was talking about Governor McConnell of Idaho sends the following dispatch to Chairman Thurston of the Republican national convention Republicans of Idaho send greeting and beg leave to assure you and the convention that they do not indorse the action of our delegates in leaving the convention We favor free coinage but do not propose to abandon the protective policy of the Republican party' We will vote for The Statesman the leading Republican paper of Idaho savs: "The action of the Idaho delegation in walking out oi the convention does not commit the party to such a suicidal It is evident that Senator Dubois does not carry the state of Idaho in his pocket The free silver craze originated in the silver state of Colorado and was started by the silver miners and the senator from Colorado has bolted the National Republican convention Now the Teller boom has been launched with the expectation that silver men of all political parties will combine and follow the silver Moses out of the wilderness to the promised land of a de A Regular Massacre of A Sacrifice that Is Almost Beyond Belief Owing to the backwardness of the season we find ourselves overstocked and WINDSOR SCARFS II Taubexeck chairman of the national committee of the Populist party with some thirty other prominent members of that party has announced in favor of Henry Teller of Colorado for president This prominent Republican bolter has not gone ever to the Populist party but the party has discarded the celebrated Omaha platform and gone to Teller on the single issue of free coinage of silver at a ratio of 16 to 1' Teller has always been a protectionist but has maintained that the gold standard and protection do not go hand in hand The Populist party is not and never has been a party of principle It is a belly-ache party in every sense and is compoeed of disgusted Democrats and Republicans out of a job We are speaking now of the leaders of that party and not of the rank and file which is generally honest in its convictions This move of Taubeneck will open their eyes to jthe weakness and instability of a party that will sacrifice the principles of the Omaha platform on the altar of silver and greed for office By accepting Teller the party loses its identity it becomes one of the has beens it must acknowledge itself a it must acknowledge that silver is the only issue and should the Democratic party adopt free coinage and nominate a free silver candidate its quarrel with Democracy comes to an end and it has no excuse for living Mb Doban of the National Democratic committee states that so far the delegates elected to the Chicago convention stand as follows in favor of gold and silver For silver 642 delegates for gold 338 contested seats 24 It is hardly probable that a gold platform will be adopted Peculiar Accident A peculiar accident occurred Thursday morning near Kennet A prospector and miner named James Raymond waB walking along the side of a steep mountain A mule grazing upon the grass on the mountain side above started a large stone rolling The stone gained velocity as it descended Jthe incline and Mr Raymond was unable to dodge it The Btone struck him upon the right leg near the ankle causing a severe fracture which extended to the ankle joint Tbe injured man was conveyed to Kennet where Dr Rohm who had been gammoned from this city reduced tbe fracture Kennet News A correspondent writes us from Kennet undtr date of June 25th and tells us the following news: Kennet is lively every night with some on horses some in wagons carts etc and some on foot County Treasurer Jackson was here on Sunday last lie paid a visit to his mines and gave the boys a lesson in catching fish Dr Rohm came here this evening to go to Ballaklala to set a broken leg for James Raymond A mule rolled a rock down the mountain side striking Raymond on the leg and breaking it 20 dos Japanese Silk Windsor Scarfs Our entire stock of Straw Hats will be many bargains offered throughout our entire stock based currency Twenty-one bolters followed Mr a small number out of some 900 so small a number in fact and representing so few electoral votes that the weakness cause is at once apparent It is stated that Henry Teller clubs are being organized by states represen tec by the bolters and that Teller will be formally placed in the field as a presidential possibility If the Democrats in the Chicago convention straddle or nominate a gold man Teller will be nomi- nated by the silver convention But there are too many ifs in the proposition and the silver men are at sea in a small boat about the size of six silver states The silver Democrats will not accept Teller neither will tbe Populists The former made the mistake in nominating Horace Greely and they -will not repeat the experiment They -will put up a straight Democrat like Boies or Bland and announce for silver The Populists will insist on maintaining their organization and the Republicans under Teller will be left to train in a gang by themselves The Republican party will triumph and poor Teller and his followers will be read out of politics as was Sumner Schuri and a legion of bolters from the grand old party before Ahem Jr William Whitney of New York would consent be could easily secure tbe support of Eastern Democrats for president But Whitney knows too well he is are anxious to do a little good in thla and can think of no pleasanter or better to do it than oy recommending One Min-Zongh Cure aa a preventive of pneumonia ptlon and other aerioua lung tronblea
